Over the past year it was brought to my attention that there was a blog designer out there that was basically scamming bloggers out of money. Some of her victims finally started talking to each other and they realized that if they teamed up they might have better luck getting some results. I offered to help them spread the word. Today I will post one of their stories and links to the rest as I get them. If you want to help them out then please repost, tweet, or link to either this post or their posts. If you posted a story about this send me the link and I'll post it here!
We are a community and need to look out for each other.
Its February 1st, and I have declared it blog scam awareness day. You may wonder why I so bluntly call out the name of Jessica Sanderson Bailey, truly a sin in the bloggersphere. I am sad to say that it has come to this and no other way.
Firstly I ASK YOU ALL, TO PLEASE: re post or re-link this post on your blog, I want it spread everywhere. It is important that as many people in our little blogger world gets this message.
2 years ago in April 2008 I noticed how some of the blogs I frequently follow had gotten a custom design on their blog. I was directed to this pink and cute delicious little site that specialized in blog design. The owner ran a blog called the tattooed mama, or mamabearjess. She customized blog designs to your liking. I thought since many had gotten such great results it should be trustworthy. So I made my inquiry.
Sure enough the tattooed mama was delighted to work with my design and asked me to pay 125 dollars for the services. *Looking back now I can see how I could have handled this better*
Then it started.
First she said she would put me on a schedule and get back to me about designs and stuff. In a week I got my design schedule, mine was scheduled August 2008, a bit long but hey she was doing this by herself. I was a bit worried of all the people who had signed up with her, and how she possibly could finish it. So I waited.
One month passed and nothing, so I write a mail.
She responds ’will most likely begin within the next few weeks“. Excusing herself that she has lots to do. Sending out this mail With a Schedule of what she is currently doing *click to enlarge*
I send a new email in August, reply:
Hi Michele, Your project began on August 20th and will be completed over the next few days! Will be sending over some snapshots asap.
In December after NOTHING I am really pissed so I send another mail, she replies.
Thank you for taking the time to send us an e-mail! We appreciate it greatly. Although we don't have a set schedule here at Delicious Design Studio, we do check our e-mail quite often. Since I am a work at home mom, the best way to reach me is through e-mail... although I am open to phone conversations on request! If I don't respond to your e-mail right away, please understand that this is the busiest time of the year for me. I may not get to all the e-mails, but I will sure try! :)
What can I do?? Now ONE WHOLE FUCKING YEAR PASSES, and all I get is the same automatic response, so I send out a stern letter. She says Hi Michele - I am sorry to hear that this is the 5th time you've e-mailed me! Has it been from this address?! I am sorry that I did not receive it. I will check my spam! :( I totally understand where you are coming from and I am sorry that I had not received your e-mails. I got this one however, so that's a start. Your design is scheduled to launch coming up in the next week. I would be happy to confirm a date with you to go over your mockups and get your design launched. Please let me know.
In September I email her about the mockups and this is my reply Thank you for the e-mail. You can catch me in the office Tuesday - Thursday evenings. Even when I'm away, I try to check my e-mail often and reply as quickly as possible. If you feel I've skipped over your e-mail, just send me a friendly little reminder. Have a great day and talk soon.
She then Writes back and says All projects will be done within Deceber 2010. After 5 MORE emails I write and say I want my money back NOW. After asking for the tenth time she replies with
Thank you for the e-mail! I have been out due to a number of uncontrolled events and personal issues in the family. All projects are in progress and are scheduled to be completed in a short amount of time. I can't thank you enough for your patience and understanding and know I am working as hard and as fast as I can to get these projects completed in a timely manner. Being as though I am not working as a web designer anymore, certain projects have been taking a little longer than expected. Please bare with me. <3
I now realize I have been scammed, and after posting a forum on 20sb so many other came out with exact same story. I want my money back and I want her to face the consequences of what she has done to so many people. I do not live in the US so I cant get a lawyer or file anything, but hopefully we can all do something together if we all raise our voice. Maybe someone out there can do something to help, This is a serious matter, we are talking about a woman taking money from us bloggers who most of us don't have 125 dollars to throw away. (or more as some have paid up to 200)
It needs to be stopped, it needs to be be put right. No one seems to be able to catch her and get a hold of her. All we want is our money back and for her stop doing this to others.
If you were affected by this scam you can fill out a form here http://macgeekgrl.com/?page_id=261
Jessica's yelp page is here http://www.yelp.com/biz/jessica-bailey-sarasota
Now Jessica sold her company dds to a nice man who is now suffering deeply by this scam, I want you to know that DDS is now a in good hands and run by a man who wants a little business. He has nothing to do with this. PLEASE I ask you to put some light on this subject, so please spread the word as much as you can through your blog, twitter, anyway you can help us I am highly thankful for. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you so much for helping us spread the word!
Wow. I wondered what happened to that chick -- she used to be all over the blogosphere and twitter...
I used her TWICE for blog template design on my Life, Liberty & Pursuit of Your Boyfriend blog, and once again to fix my server issues when it got all eff'd up in an auto update of Wordpress.
I never really thought anything about it -- I was disappointed with my template after telling her all the things I wanted done -- she essentially just designed a header. It seemed to be a lot of money and time to complete just that. Again, my fault for not saying something at the time.
About a year later (after the initial install), I got an email from an anonymous female asking who designed my blog -- because it was HER design. When I emailed Jess about the situation, coincidentally she was running a "FREE" template contest on twitter -- that I ended up "winning." Hence, a new blog design went up almost immediately.
I guess looking back, I'm not surprised -- and my initial payments were made two years ago, so I imagine there's not much to do now. Shocked, actually because a LOT of girls used her services here in Cleveland.
Good for you for doing this! I know Chele has been getting pissed off with the situation for a while now and I saw another blogger who had an issue with her too . . . just sucks people get away with this crap, taking advantage of other people like this.
